Although day by day prices wise, there is one direction in which spending is in honour bound to continue. The rising generation must not be stinted. Fortunately the necessaries for solid growth of body are not particularly expensive—especially if the unnecessaries are cut down. Enough milk, butter and whole meal bread are the best body-building materials possible. Milk is a "first-class" protein food—protein being the compound which repairs the wear and tear of the body. By "first-class" is meant that milk is utilizable in its entirety by the body. Wholemeal is a "second-class" or vegetable protein food—not entirely utilizable, but providing other constituents not obtainable from animal protein.
Butter is one of the three fats (the others are cream and cod liver oil) which contain an abundance of Vitamin A—an important factor in growth. It was a lack of Vitamin A which caused so much deplorable malnutrition during the 1914-18 war.
Teeth to eat with, eyes to see with, and good feet on which to walk—the battle of life lis difficult to fight without them. There is in Britain a Shoe Research Association which is following up the clue that many ailments like headaches, backache, indigestion and internal derangements may be caused by unsuitable shoes and cured when the right shoes are worn.
Keep the teeth clean—a cavity usually begins as a minute fissure in the enamel, perhaps a scratch barely visible to the eye, where bacteria may lodge and remain. A mouth wash after brushing the teeth will search out the least of these danger spots. It isn't a nice thought, but it's true—one child in five has defective vision. This is the result of a few short centuries of not going to bed when darkness came. A child's eyes are immature and easily strained and should be protected by frequent examinations.
