Chummy Troops were under canvas near a Lancashire village, and one of them has fallen in love with one of the local girls.

The girl's mother, wishing to give the lads a treat, made them a large potato pie for supper.

The soldier-lover, returning with this to camp, late at night, was spotted by the sentry irving to creep through the hedge.

In the semi-darkness Tommy spied a figure on the other side and called: "Hey, chum, hold this pie. Here's the—guard."

"Chum" obliged, and held the pie while the soldier scrambled through the hedge.

"Thanks," he gasped, as he took over the pie, and looking up he found that "Chum" was the colonel. Being a sport the colonel smiled and walked away.
