On each of the three days that British troops marched out of Shanghai, they were led as far as Garden Bridge by the band of the Fourth Regiment, United States Marine Corps—a gracie ous gesture on the part of the Marine authorities that has deeply touched every member of the British community, not only in Shanghai, but throughout the whole of China. Such a display of friendship by the American forces in the city cannot go unnoticed and the "North-China Daily News", takes this opportunity of thanking the Fourth "Marines in Shanghai for their stirring send-off to British colleagues of the Shanghai Defence Force. In Peiping, too, the United States Marines turned out a guard of honour to bid farewell to departing members of the East Surrey Regiment—just another instance of graciousness on the part of a Corps which has had long and friendly associations with the British Army. Like their friends in the British Army, the United States Marines have long been renowned for their good fellowship and sporting characteristics, The only thing that is causing the British community plenty of worry in connection with the departture of British forces is the fact that the United States Marines are going to take more stopping than ever on the rugby football field. If, as another display of kindness to the British community here, they would enforce an order that no man in their fifteen is to exceed ten stone (140 1b, to Americans) it would greatly be appreciated. Another nice gesture, too, would be to find, as an alternative display of goodwill, some nice Saturday and Sunday afternoon duties for the huskies of the Regiment. Once again this journal voices its appreciation to the Fourth Marines for their send-off to British troops and for other favours on the sporting field to come—we hope!
