Shortly after its establishment] more than a month ago the committee announced that one. of its primary objectives was the investigation into factual Chinese customs" regarding housing matters. Tt was stated that 8 number of landlords and others have expressed themselves in disagreement with interpretations these customs made" by Chinese courts. The latter have delivered numerous decisions on housing dis sensions on their judicial interpreta tion of Chinese customs.
The committee during its month existence has turned a dear ear (0 numerous requests for it to act as arbitrator in housing disputes in the French Concession and declared that its purpose was not to usurp the powers of the courts.
