Standing on the outskirts of this Japanese base on the Mongolian frontier I saw a fierce aerial dog fight today between Japanese and Soviet planes which ranged over many miles.
Official Japanese announcements claimed that 59 Soviet planes were shot down today. Sixteen of these were said to have been downed in this area. I saw one plane which could not be identified, fall in flames. Another made a forced landing. The Japanese said one of their planes, their only casualty, had been forced down.
The fight waged over a broad aren and was still being fought when it passed beyond our sight here.
