On the Offensive

Pre, Jones was fed up with the parcels of cheese he received from home, so he wrote to his mother the following message:

"Please don't send me any more cheese, Every time I open a sandwich the Germans think we are making a gas attack, and open up artillery fire on our position."

8 Stranger Two men, returning from a party in the early hours, were arguing whether it was the sun or the moon that was showing in the sky.

Meeting another man, they explained their, argument, and asked his opinion. Unfortunately, he too, had been celebrating. All the same, he answered politely: "I'm sherry, gentlemen, but Im-hic—a stranger in these parts myself."

Official Tue man in the dock was looking very downcast.

"Please he lenient with me, your Worship," he said, addressing the magistrate. "I have a good many dependent on me for their support. It would be only fair to consider them."

A kindly light came into the magistrate's eyes as he listened to this plea.

"Children?" he inquired kindly.

The prisoner shook his head.

"No, your Worship. Detectives."

Changed A JEWISH tailor was employed in the wardrobe department of a film studio. One morning he noticed a new director on the set.

"Halle, Goldberg!" cried the tailor, slapping the director on the back. "Mine old pal of twenty years! Ven I knew you, you velghed eighteen stones—now you veigh only ten. Six feet tall you used to be, and now youre a shreemp. Vunce you vote eyeglasses, now you don't year em. Goldberg, mine pal, you've changed in twenty years."

The director stared coldly and replied: "My name isn't Goldberg. It's Rosenberg."

"Looka, look!" cried the tailor. "Changed your name too, eh?" now in fower and easily identified by its twin flowers: later the shrub will be covered with twin berries. We see many plants of lily of the valley in flower at present and we decided io try and find out how it got its name. We find that the old name of Convallaria was Lilium. convallium, derived from convallis, a valley. The plant is generally grown in shaded places and valleys invariably provide a certain amount of shade, We expect that many owners of gardens dependent on tap water for watering purposes, are beginning to wonder when the "clerk of the weather" is going to give them a "break" and reduce their water bills a little.
