Battalion" Sildier Killed by Russian Guard

Man Fires When Menaced by Angry Crowd, Stone Throwing Soldiers; Camp Conditions Worse

HE riot of the interned soldiers of the famous "Doomed Batta. lion," which started last Friday after the internees and thei commander, General Hsieh, had objected to certain repairs being done in the Camp, reached its apogee yesterday when a member of the Russian Regiment Guard was obliged to open fire in self-defence.

One Chinese soldier was shot dead, while the others dispersed. A few minutes later, another Russian soldier opened fire when he was stoned by the internee: He shot into the wall, however, without injuring anybody.

The shooting took place at about 12.30 p.m. when the Russian soldier, on duty at the Singapore Road entrance to the Internment Camp, faced a difficult situation, threatened by a crowd of Chinese workers on one side, and a score of internees stoning him from within. The Chinese workers from the neighbouring factories gathered at the entrance shortly after twelve and allowed themselves to be agitated by the intern ho urged them to attack the -sentry.
