Giving every indication of being a grandiose affair, the Annual Shanghai Track and Field Meet will begin today at 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Shanghai American School.
Entries have been received from nine teams that will aggregate 200 of the city's foremost athletes, These include the East Surrey Regiment, Foreign "YMCA," Combined Schools, Betar, Fourth US. Marines, Jewish Recreation Club, Shanghai Municipal Police, Hwa Lien and representatives of the Seaforth Highlanders.
The Foreign "Y", the present title holders will not be in a very comfortable position to win this time as they have done in previous years, as they have lost Fonseca' and Prokofieff to the Police. The team, however, will still be strong with Matulis, Abramoff, Volodchenko brothers, Dobrenky and J, Service carrying the "Y" colours, The Chinese team, Hwa Lien, are known to be particularly strong this year as sore of the last known Chinese runners will represent this team and surprises will undoubtedly take place, The third team likely to be in the picture to fight for the first place are the U.S. Marines who are an unknown quantity this year as there will be many competing from the newly-arrived contingent. The outcome will be witnessed with interest as competition is expected to be close, the effect that the driver's condition was good and that he will be released from confinement within a few days.
