Shanghai, July 29, The small French Colony in Tientsin celebrated its national holiday on July 14, in traditional manner and as in past years, many foreign friends of France oltonded the various functions, which included receptions at the Consulate-General, military. parade and a dinner which was followed by a ball at the French Club.
"Among those attending the ro ception at the club were a Jarge umber of Japanese ofeials me cluding high military and naval officers. In proposing the toast, Michaud, president of the club,' told the assembled guests that he hoped that the French wine with which they had responded to the toast proposed a few minutes earlier by the" French Consul-General would insti! the courage which was much needed at the present time.
He said that the object of hie speech was to maintain a tradition although this may seem a paradox In view of the revolutionary heroes of France which they were commemorating. As an' example, he cited nudism the revival of which had often been. attempted "even in recent times and particularly Yess than a month previously in" their own city without having however met with the enthusiasm of the Population as a whole, notwithstand-Ing the fact that the thermometer was continually rising. He added that even those who had to submit to this nudism did not thusiastic about it nor were they thankful for their experiences this connection.
In concluding his address, thanked all the foreign friends who had come to the reception notwithstanding the diticulties connected therewith at the present time.
