Alarms Preceded by Flashes

Vivid flashes, followed by loud explosions which rattled windows and shook houses, preceded the alarms. Anti-aircraft guns imme. diately went into action while British defence planes took to the air to engage the night raiders.

The Germans came toward the British coast in waves, separating as they crossed the coast and carrying out their raids singly or in small units, it was understood. Some of the Nazi raiders were reported to have dropped "wailing bombs" with shrieking sirens accompanying the downward flight of the "eggs of death."

Observers on the eastern coast said the "din was terrific, what with the roar of motors, guns, explosions and sirens."—United Press.
