The cléséd bank was the Shanghai branch' of att' institution" formerly" ilöcatéd, in Nanking. Following the withdrawal of Chinese' officials" and troops from Nanking in the face of Japanese invasion the bank moved its head office to Chungking. Irregülari-ties soon developed in the Shanghai branch because it was difficult for the Chungking head office to look after its business here.
Just how the bank het has'suffered a staggering loss is not known. Startling revelations may be made in future: when the Settlement police have completed their investigations. The vaults of the closed bank have been opened once under the supervision of polite authórities, but only $800 have been found there. The closed bahk was a commercial institution.
