God Is at War

The prime truth that we have to face and make our accommodation with is that God is at war, has been from the beginning at war with chaos, and brutality, and ignor-ud evil, and slavery. He will made these His enemies His footstool. That, I say, is the prime truth, and for myself it is also the final truth, embracing all that we need in the way of di for our own attitude and activities and hopes. It does not follow that therefore the only possible way of life for time of war is a so-called Old Testament Way with an Old Testament God to justify it. God is at war with dark-Dess and with evil, and in that there can be no distinction drawn between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New.

Occasionally in the course of human history it would appear that God had been forced to the conclusion that the only way in which to deal with the evil of the world was to destroy mankind on a colossal scale or to allow men to destroy one another. That has come when the forces of, evil always resident in man, have come to flood exceedingly, and the normal berriers, also Tesident in mankind, have been swept aside. But tha is abnormal The constant fact about God's dealings with man is that He is waging war with evil and that He has committed Himself to a working policy in that warfare of co-opera fion with man. The reverse side to that is that man, in so far as He is God's man, God's liege man. is committed to the same fight against evil, and there is no discharge in that war, and no room for peace-time soldiers. we cannot afford to leave any unit we are de! on victory- By all means let us pray, but let-it be real prayer that can and will accomplish some strategic Or at least some tactical gain.
