Long Campaign Seen

It is part of the puzzle and may be 1 long'harrying campaign rather than a Blitzkrieg, It diverts British strength from the shores of Egypt and North Africa and might tempt a British diversion from the western Mediterranean around Gib The latter diversion is not so probable unless the British fall into an obvious trap. That is where Spain and Portugal come in. Spain is friendly to the Axis and has ambitions on Gibraltar and North Africa. Generalissimo Francisco Franco, Premier, has hesitated to enter the war on the Axis side until victory seems likely, lest his country be subjected to further starvation in the wake of the disastrous civil war.

Portugal likewise has kept aloof, fearing that its entry into the war would bring about a starvation blockade by Britain, Portugal being dependent on imports from the Atlantic side for a decent national existence in these times, If Hitler can make a sufficient showing to fit the Iberian Peninsula into the jig saw puzzle, the Axis will have almost all Europe in line for its Nazi-dominated pan-Europe. Sweden and Switzerland, the remaining hold-cuts—except for embattled Greece—would be easy.—United Press.
