Important decisions including one stating that the rice of the best rice should not exceed $45 per "zah" and that of "hsien mee" or the second grade rice should not exceed $38 were reached by rice merchants of the Shanghai Rice and Bean Dealers Association yesterday afternoon at a meeting held in their association at 15 Avenue Edward VII. Although the prices thus fixed were considered to be extremely high, those attending the meeting thought that they had done their best and they decided to petition the Settlement authorities to help settle the problem.
One important decision stated that the association should petition the Settlement authorities to make arrangements for increasing the supply of rice, as commencing yesterday all rice and other cereals sent to Shanghai by train were not allowed to be transported into the foreign areas here. The Settlement authorities were urged to arrange for the transportation of between 50000 and 100,000 "zah" of rice priced only at $15 per "zah" in Wuhu to Shanghai. It was decided that the authorities might fix the price of this rice when it arrives- in Shanghai. The merchants decided also to start a "coNective purchase" movement so that foreign rice can be bought collectively by public bodies. They encouraged people to report on activities of manipulators and will report the names of the latter to the authorities,
