New Japanese Demands on N.E.I

Seen in British Quarters — Tin Mining Concessions and Rights to: Prospect For Nickel, Chrome Believed Wanted

London, Aug. 24

New Japanese demands on the Netherlands East Indies, possibly for tin mining concessions and rights to prospect for nickel and chrome, were anticipated by British quarters here yesterday. Tt was also felt that Japan would soon demand general economic expansion and the freedom to increase immigration facilities in the Indies.

These demands, it was believed, will follow the recent abandonment of AngloJapanese negotiations for a contraband agreement. Japanese trade in the British Empire has dwindled since the beginning of the European war and the Japanese have been compelled to look elsewhere for raw materials. Japanese imports of nickel and copper from Canada were nil this year while Japan has been unable to obtain British scrap iron, beyond a little from India.—
