British Victory

Developments Held Proof Defeat Impossible

Ankara, Aug. 24.

Both in Turkey and throughout the Arab world of the Near East there has been a markedly increased note of encouragement and confidence as a result of recent war developments, especially British air victories, which the official paper "Ulus" declares demonstrated: that conquest of Britain is impossible.

The "Ulus" adds: "The great qualities which have gone to make the British Empire are clearly perceived in the present British determination to fight to the end and the stubbornness which emerges increasingly strengthened by each-new trial."

Interest in Turkey is at present centering firstly upon Egypt, secondly on America's attitude and thirdly' the position of Spain. It is fully realized that the French capitulation vastly increased the difficulties of Britain in Egypt but the courage of the decision not to make a useless expenditure in Somaliland is fully appreciated and regard ied as greatly strengthening Britain's ability to hold Egypt against all comers.

Recent developments in America and Spain are regarded here as most 296 propitious, while further encouragement is drawn from a report of Russia's more- friendly attitude towards Turkey.—Reuter. in, $5.10. d. fat-4,
