The Week in Russia

Nov. 3.

'The events in Russia during the past week indicate that the Red Armies succeeded. in stemming the four-week-old offensive of the mans with Moscow as the objective, and that the rushing up of further German Re~ Inforcements represents an' endeavour to regain the lost momentum. The next few Gays should show whether they can succeed in doing that, though previous experience has shown that, once an offensive had been held, for had petered out, considerable reorganiza~ tion was necessary before it could be resumed again. The frantic endeavours of the Germans to force a decision as soon as possible thas caused them to abandon their earlier policy of spending some. weeks in prepara-Hon for an offensive, for they apparently hope by throwing: more and more men into the fray to break down the exceptionally determined' resistance which the Russian troops. are" offering to their "attempted advance. Despite all. efforts, the German, progress towards Moscow in the centre has Been "practically. negligible during the past week, "while. attempts to. force a passage orth and south of the centre have not been $0. successful as the Germans would have wished.

In the south the Germans appear to have made some progress along the north shores
