The 300 Russians, who last nights communique announced as killed, were killed in the first major encounter in fourteen days in the Salla sector. The encounter was one in which the Finns were pushing their advantage in an effort to mass remanent Russian forces between the two jaws of a nut-cracker movement south of Salla. Fighting has now reached the actual border in the Suomussalmi sector at Raate which is two kilometres from the frontier on the road from Suomussolini to the border. Lake Raate, in the same neighbourhood, is dissected by the frontier.
