Chinese Activity Near Nanking

Japanese Attacked Along Shanghai-Nanking Railway Chungking States

Chungking, Oct. 3.

Chinese forces are very active in the area south of the Shanghai-Nanking railway, declared a Chinese military spokesman at this afternoon's press conference.

Chinese troops are said to be attacking Japanese positions at Wu shing, on the south shore of Taihu Lake, and at Chingkiang, ^elow Nanking.

Questioned regarding movements of Japanese aircraft, the spokesman said the number of aircraft at Hankow was about the same as before, but there had been an increase in south China and a decrease in the number of machines at Yunchen, in south Shansi.

"There is no danger of the Japanese advancing westward from Ichang into Szechuen for the purpose of seizing Chungking." The spokesman based his belief on the lack of fresh activities on the part of the Japanese forces in the Ichang area, which, he said, had come to a standstill since July.

Commenting on a report that strong Chinese columns were advancing along the north and south banks of the Yangtze River, converging on Ichang in a pincer movement, he stated such development was "possible."

Replying to a question regarding x report that 60,000 Chinese troops had moved into positions on the banks of the Yangtze opposite Kiukiang for the purpose of disrupting river ccmmunications between Shanghai and Hankow, the spokesman declared it was only natural that the Chinese High Command was trying te inter-lore with traffic on this main Japan-transportation artery in central China.—Reuter.
