SHIRLEY TEMPLE IN "THE LITTLE COLONEL"

cee Boyer Back in Hollywood In the early days of the war, there were all sorts of rumours about the fortunes or misfortunes of many film stars. One learned that Charles Boyer, Jean Gabin, Fernandel and other French actors had been taken into the army and were booked for military duties. Then came the further statement that they had been released from military service to make pictures in France, more or less, under Governmental supervision. But the very latest news about Boyer is that he is back in Hollywood to fulfil his contracts with his American producers, Erich von Stroheim is another actor of whom reports have varied. According to one statement, he, although German in origin, had been given a commission in the French Army. This was surprising as in appearance he is the typical Prussian officer who had served in the German Army in 1914. But von Stroheim is back in Hollywood merely to fulfil his contracts and wil ce-star with Zorina in "I Was An Adventuress."

"Maryland" to Come Those who have seen the technicolour picture, "Kentucky," with its story of horse-breeding and horse-racing, will know how Walter Brennan, as the old man who knew a race horse when he saw one, stole the picture and in a large measure made it. For his fine acting he was given an Academy award, and doubtless on account of it has been borrowed by Twentieth-Century Fox to appear in "Maryland," which Will be a technicolour companion picture to "Kentucky."

Brennan is one of those film actors who relies on a matured technique acquired on the stage. This accounts for his versatility. There is no typing about him. He can appear saintly, heroic or utterly villainous. He is a master of make up and gets right into the skin of any part allotted to him. His name may not appear in the largest letters outside the picture houses, but whenever he is in a cast, one may be sure that at least one character will make the ALSO: "MOVIES MARCH ON"—(March of Time Special) picture worth the money.
