It will be seen from the above that the net value of the trade of China, import and export, expressed in terms of standard dollars, was for the year 1939 $2361 million as compared with $1,649 million during 1938. Imports increased from $886 million to $1334 million, an increase of 50 per cent, with exports also increasing in value from $763 million to $1027 million, an increase of 35 per cent. In this connection it should, however, be noted that, for purposes of conversion into standard dollars of the declared gold unit valuation of imparts, the Government having retained for 1939 the average official daily rate for duty-paying purposes, based on the average official daily rates for foreign exchange of Pence Sterling 14%, U.S$030, Japanese ¥.103, etc. or the average official rate of Gold Unit 1—St$250, the standard dollar valuation of imports as shown above for the year 1939 is not augmented by the rising value on the open market of the foreign exchanges in terms of dollars, Of total gross imports valued in dollars at $1,343 million, it is of interest to note that 43.79 per cent. was entered at Shanghai, 25.66 per cent. at Tientsin, 9.01 per cent. at Tsingtao, and 5,39 per cent at Chinwangtao, while the share of Japan Proper in the import trade amounted to 2334 per cent. and that of the United States of America to 15.94 per cent.

In gold units the gross value of imports totalled G.U. 542 million as compared with G.U. 389 million during 1938, an increase of 39 per cent. While the bulk of the imports from Japan Proper, Formosa, Korea, and ihe Kwantung Leased Territory, or G.U. 142 million worth out of a tota! import for all China of G.U. 186 million, continued to be entered through Tientsin and the Northern Ports, the percentage of Japanese preponderance at these ports shows no increase over 1938. The closure of the Yangtze River to navigation, has practically eliminated all importation through this channel The revival of the import trade at Shanghai is particularly noticeable, totalling G.U. 238.8 million as against G.U. 118.9 million. The enhanced figure at Shanghai is largely due to increases in the import of raw cotton of G.U. 58.7 million and in the import of cereals, principally wheat, of G.U. 124 million. Of Shanghai's td-tal gross imports valued at G.U. 238.8) million, Japan's share, including Formosa, Korea, and the Kwantung Leased Territory, was GU. 428 million; the share of the United States of America, G.U. 474 million; of British India, G.U. 42.1 million; of Germany, G.U. 18.7 million; of Great Britain, G.U. 16 million; of Brazil, G.U. 128 million; of Australia, G.U. 103 million; and of Netherlands India, G.U. 10.3 million.
