Easy chairs upholstered only with loose cushions are very easy to cover, as there is little strain on the stuff. Any washing material can be used, made into a bordered bag fastened with a lightning fastener. A pair of large flat covered buttons placed over a single stitch of string going right through the cushion will fix the cover, prevent it from rucking.
By far the happiest effects in cushions are obtained by treatments which leave the surface smooth, such as by glazing, quilting, or the use of plain or printed organdie over coloured silk. Many people overlook the fact that a few hard cushions are good on deep divans and that there is decided scope for flat buttoned pillows. Covers decorated with wool or woollen tufts get dirty and tousled and are of only passing charm. Soft furry chenille materials make delightful strongly coloured cushions, and contrast well with plain serge or repp covers.
Legs which are too fat, or calves which are too thin, can be effectively converted into things of beauty very simply, Again sit in a chair as described above, with your right leg crossed over your left knee, and keeping your foot straight out in front of you, with the toes pointing upwards, rotate your foot twenty times to the right and twenty times to the left. Then reverse and repeat with the other foot.
