U.S. Hears "Scream of Defiance"

Washington, Feb. 25.

"A scream of defiance at Britain" was how the United States radio described Herr Hitler's speech. Groups of people gathered outside radio Shops. in Washington to hear the English translations.

The speech appears to interest the general public more than Mr. Neville Chamberlain's—probably because it is felt that the world knows where Britain stands, but is less certain of Germany's intentions. Herr Hitler's speech, in fact, is regarded by some as a "curtain raiser" to the talks he is expected to have shortly with Mr. Sumner Welles, American Under-Secretary of State, who is on a peace mission to Europe.—Reuter,
