Cholera has been following in the wsake of the soldiers. There have been hundreds of cases at Tung chuan (140 li from Mienchow The hospital of the Friends' sion has beens kept busy. Much is being made by some rechal men of the "white earth" treatment, and it seems to have met with some success in Chengtu. The T'ungchuan doctor, however, told me that it had met with poor success there. This is due, she thought, to the extreme severity of the cases, collapse setting in before the treat-nicht could exercise its influence. Cities where there has not been much coming and going of the soldlery seem to be free of the cholera. For instance all along the road from Mienchow to this place I made careful inquiries, but have not discovered any cases or any fear of it. That is a distance of about 70 English miles. Cities like Mienchow, T'wngchuan, Chungpa, Chunkiang and Chengtu and Kuan-hsien and other places, where the soldiers have been, are suffering. Pathetic stories are told of the condition of the soldiers through its ravages.
