First Past the Post, An Easy Winner

the Sport of Kings we have another Shanghai champion who spans the arches of the years seemingly without effort, to add fresh laurels to his glowing record with each succeeding season, "Charlie" Encarnacao is first past the post with several lengths to spare, in the classic of the turf, and he can look back with justifiable pride on his long and varied list of notable wins.

Encarnacao has had 18 years in the racing saddle, during which time he has piloted his mounts to victory on the tracks of Shanghai, Hongkong, Tsingtao and Macao, and he has won nearly every classic there is to win, Last year he was leading jockey here with 30 wins to his credit and, incidentally, it was not until last Autumn that he was able to catch up with the one prize that had eluded him by a short head on several occasions during his long career. He rode Hindhead to a spectacular victory in the Autumn Champions, scoring a major upset by defeating the raging favourite, Cluniehouse. This was the first time that he has won this classic—and with his win he rounded off his record of having annexed every single classic in Shanghai.

Despite his advancing age, he has been the most consistent jockey in this city for the last decade. Last week he opened the Spring season with a fine flourish, scoring three wins, two seconds and a third out of six starts.

And yesterday he carried on the good work by adding yet two more wins and a second, to put him well ahead of the field in the first furlong of the spring season. It is to be noted that his second sensational defeat of the favourite Cluniehouse was purely the result of fine judgment and matchless experience.
