The extremely variable weather Shanghai experienced yesterday and the day before is accounted for by the fact that a depression passed over the city, causing atmospheric disturbances, The warm hours on Monday marked the approach of the depression, and the thunderstorm, in the evening indicated that the centre of the disturbance was overhead.
The light fall of snow experienced yesterday at noon was the aftermath, and caused by extremely cold northwesterly winds blowing across Shanghai. Siccawei Observatory characterized conditions as most unusual for Shanghai, although it is perfectly regular sequence of weather.
Shanghailanders, however, regular sequence or not. were bewildered by the sudden changes, and many were caught napping on Monday night when the thunderstorm broke just before midnight. Yesterday, though, many took raincoats and umbrellas to work, despite favourable conditions in the morning. and were justified in their action by the snow~fall at noon. More normal weather is anticipated now that the depression has left this area.
