Directly the telegram was received by Messrs, Jardine, Matheson & Ca., owners of the vessel, they communi-ceted with the British naval and consular authorities. While Commander R. A. B. Edwards, Senior Eritish Naval Officer in Shanghai, communicated with Admiral Haseonfa by telephone, and later made a personal call urging the immediate release of the vessel, Mr. Herbert Phillips, H.M. Consul-General, telephoned to Mr. S. Hidaka, Japanese Consul-General, regarding the incident, later paying a personal call.
The Japanese authorities explained that it was very difficult to trace the particular naval unit responsible for the seizure of the vessel, but promised to release the ship as soam as possible. The British naval authorities were considering sending down H.M.S. Cricket, gunboat, to investigate the matter, and the gunboat was due to leave for the Island at about 430 p.m. but it was later decided to postpone her departure as it was learned that the Tungwo was to be released shortly.
