Seen on the Bund

It was a tag day. Two fair sellers were on duty in the bright sunshine outside the Shanghai Club, armed with collection boxes and shields of tags, extracting dollars from the populace.

A rickshaw coolie ambled past and his eye fell on the bright-coloured tags. Trained. by a series of health weeks, "safety first" weeks and other campaigns where quantities of badges, buttons and bright-coloured literature were distributed.he obediently strolled across the pavement and helped himself to a tag from one of the shields.

There was high indignation, on the part of the rickshaw coolie, when he was sternly informed that the tags were not free. Definitely. A passing Chinese er-plained away his curiosity and he retraced his steps to his vehicle, picked up the shafts and went on his own dollar hunting mission—smiling—and perhaps pondering on the strange ways of the foreigners. So inconsistent!
