"As is probably known the Netherlands Indian Government after thorough enquiries, has decided to release and expel a number of German women and children from Java.
At the same time our Government issued a declaration stating expressly that heir release had nothing to do with the reprisals committed by the Germans in the Netherlands on account of the internment of Germans in Netherlands India.
"One of the German controlled newspapers asserts that these internments involve innocent people on both sides, German citizens in Netherlands India who were only interned because of their nationality and Netherlands citizens in Holland. mostly former residents of Netherlands India, who were taken away from their families, their work and their country in reprisal. The interesting part is that about the German citizens in Netherlands India who according to this paper were only internedsbecause they happened to be Germans. How innocent they were we can fully understand if we think of all those innocent Germans in our country, in Norway. in Belgium and in Frence and the role they played during the invasion of these countries. Whatever they had planned to do in Java was nipped in the bud by the prompt action of the NEI. Government. The fifth column has, at least, had no chance in Java to abuse our hospitality in such a criminal way.
