War Efforts

Is Everyone Giving ro the Editor of the *Nonru-CHINA Dany NEWS"

Sm;—I have to smile when I read that phrase "Give till it hurts." How many British people do? Oh yes, the donation columns seem to belie this, but I know that there are hundreds not thousands) who do not dig down at all, or very, very little. Tan the donation columns, be it Salva-I have come to the conclusion that [tion Army, some other charity, or British war efforts, are filled by the same people.

There may be many who would give if they could. I-am not speaking of them. but I personally know many who could multiply their remittance several hundred per cent. and still not give enough. There are many; eomplacent Britons who sit back, some even go as far as to say "This lis not my war." Talk about shades of Fifth Columnists—they are far, far worse.

The tragedy of it all Is that if this inertia keeps on it may soon be too Mate, and they will wake up ron their selfish dreams and find what? rrt j Tu many other countries they are not asked what they will give, they just have to give, whether they eat that day or not; the British Govern-t, as usual, is too soft. One would think at a time like this the consular authorities could enforce income tax, 1 is the fairest of all measures, inasmuch as those who have nothing. need give nothing.

1 I do not pretend I give until it hurts, and the reply might be "What right have you to talk?" I haven't but since there is a free press and since these thoughts have been burning within me for quite some time. 1 felt I would like to get rid of them. I would like to cry "Wake up, all you people. You self-complacent lot of people." Perhaps we need a bomb or two to wake us up to the dangers all around. whilst we carry on in our world of make-believe, of entertainment, There is not enough of "In lieu of......,..." donations, people want their cake and to eat it too. Surely we can all sacrifice something now,-so that the world may be full of abundance later. Or is it too late? Sometimes I'm afraid it is "What can be done to touch the people who give as little as they can. yet deny themselves very little. Since their conscience evidently does not make them, what can be done to make them "Give till it hurts?"

May I sign myself Gre.
