The only first-round engagement of the Ladies' Singles division of the badminton league was played off last Saturday and, as predicted, Mrs. C. Maclean emerged victorious over Miss A. Krahmaleff in fairly easy fashion although the scores appear to be close.
Mrs. Maclean could have triumphed in two straights sets had she settled down to play her usual game. She started off carelessly and dropped the first set but from then on, although Miss Krahmaleff gained 17 points in the next two sets, she was never in danger of being beaten.
Miss Krahmaleff made a very sporting gesture indeed to have entered the championship series this year as she is a comparative beginner and is to be congratulated on her effort in taking the first set. Though she fought hard during the entire game, she was fighting against heavy odds, as Mrs. Maclean's accurate placing had her "on the double" almost continually.
The winners superior courtcraft and racquet work coupled, with match experience, were the instru. mental factors in her success. These were particularly apparent when she ran up her winning points in the last two sets. She literally toyed with the loser towards the end.
In the professional angle of the card "Tiger" Simpkins has been matched against Mardensky, It will be recalled that the former lost to Tihanoft on two occasions via the kayo route and since then has been in strict training with the one ambition of meeting the Russian kayoist again, He has shown marked improvement under the tutelage of Cpl. Taylor. Marine trainer, and though pitted against a good lad should be able to secure the edge, Bouts have vet to be arranged for Petrozzi of the Marines and Cheremisin and Vetretennikoff of the Police, As these are side-issues to the contest there should be little difficulty in matching them, Tickets are now on sale at Messrs.
Having accounted for Miss A. Krahmaleff successfully, Mrs. C. Maclean gained the right to meet Miss E. Krahmaleff. sister of the loser, in the second round. She is not expected to encounter much difficulty in surviving her next match as the latter, like her unfortunate sister, is also a beginner, entering the contest for the love of the game.
