Meanwhile. the rice situation in the Settlement still leaves much to be desired. apart from the labour unrest. if the Chinese report that the official rice to be sold by the French Concession authorities here will be much cheaper is true. Tt is stated that the Saigon rice bought by French authorities here will be priced at only $108 per bag instead of $110 per picul which is the price of the Hongkong rice sold in the Settlement. The Concession rice therefore will about $87 per picul as compared with the higher price of $110. Arrangements for selling the Saigon rice are nearing completion. It is said that the Saigon rice bought by the French authorities here is a kind of "mixed broken rice" which ferior.
