HE Second Battalion captured the MacGregor Cup, symbolic of baseball supremacy in the Fourth Marines, yesterday when Bozo Duncan and his crew trounced the First Battalion, defenders of the trophy, at the Race Course by 15 to 8.
Despite the intermittent drizzling rain which twice halted the progress of the contest a large crowd of spectators attended the play-off game, the two teams having been tied for the first place in the regimental standings calculated at the conclusion of the Shanghai City Baseball League. Enthusiasm was high between the supporters of the rival squads and the presence of the Marine Band added colour to the occasion Nick Nicolai and Tiny Pack poled out homers for the Second Battalion, each driving ip one runner. Each side collected 10 hits while the 10 errors committed by the First Battalion together with passed balls and wild pitches greatly helped their rivals to increase the score. Out of 15 runs only eight points were earned, Rhodes started for the First Battalion on the mound and was yanked in the fifth inning after Tiny Pack cracked out a circuit-clout, Lefty Houston being delegated to fill the vacancy. Morris of the Second B: talion showed signs of weakening t wards the end of the tussle and was relieved by Pack in the eighth frame after he had issued two passes in succession.
