New York, June 10.
Ted Williams, slugging Red Sox outfielder, retained h's hold on the American League batting race for the second consecutive week as Harold Reiser of the Dodgers duplicated the feat in the National League standings.
Leaders through Friday were:— comparatively little experience. but whom their fellow owners hope to see out before long. since it is only by active racing that not only experience but also the full enjoyment of these "Star" Class boats can be obtained.
The course chosen was a reach up river with the flood against an E.S E. wind round No. 5 Astrea Buoy to starboard and a long run down river round No. I buoy to starboard and thence a beat back to the line. There was some exciting mancuvring before the start to obtain a windward position and these yachts considerably interfered with each other and allowed Daphne and Dorothy to get away e on the bell to leeward with a free wind. Daphne rapidly pulled ahead and managed to up well. pass No. 3 buoy to starboard as was required and very nearly pass No. 4 buoy also without tacking, as a result of which she gyped round No. 5 nicely clear of the fleet. Most of the other yachts made some leeway necessitating longer tacks to pass these buoys in the course of which several competitors. notably Leda. became involved with a fleet of junks who were beating up river. Dorothy reached the No. 5 buoy second but made the mistake of taking it far too wide and allowing Leda. Dragonfly, Catherine and Sun Lee to get round ahead of her in that order.
