Need of Iron

Of Italy's needs of iron ore and scrap all but about one-fifth have to be imported. Of the latter (600,000 tons yearly) nearly three-quarters have been coming from the United States and will now be subject to blockade. The maximum output of the Italian steel industry is 4,000,000 tons yearly, but the best it has done yet is 2,000,000 tons. Italy must also import annually from outside the Mediterranean 75,000 tons of copper, 4.000 tons of nickel, 4,000 tons of tin. 30,000 tons of rubber, 250,000 tons of castor and other oilseeds, 40,000 tons of wool and a quantity of toluol.

Italian food resources are limited. While she has made great progress toward self-sufficiency in wheat, she has had in recent years to import an average of 500,000 tons, together with 100,000 tons of maize, 75,000 tons of potatoes (largely from Germany), 30,000 tons of meat, 100,000 tons of fish (from France and Scandinavia), ánd 900,000 tons of phosphate for fertilizer. Italians can live on little for a long time, but scarcity begins to tell when added to war strain.
