Through the Burma Highway

Recent Chinese reports were to the effect that Chinese merchants had Jost all hoy porting their goods to the of "free China" through Indo-China in view of the changed situation there. Meetings have been held among them for sending their goods to Chungking-controlled areas through the Burma highway which is going to be reopened soon by the British government. It was then suggested that Hongkong shipping circles would be approached on the latter transportation project.

Judging from recent reports appearing in the Chinese press, the reopening of the Burma roüte is as important to Chungking as it is to Shanghai manufacturers and e porters, to say nothing of its effects on British and American trade.

Chinese traders here, according to all press accounts, are suffering tremend ously from the Japanese blockade of the sea coast, especially the Chekiang coast where even third-pi shipping business has bèen restricted.
