Mr. Morgenthau went to the Treasury in the Autumn of 1983 as Under-Secretary, a post that-was equivalent to the Secretaryship, because William H. Woodin, the Secretary. was al desperately ill and unable fo give much of time or energy to the job. Following Mr. Woodin's death he became Secretary, amd the, generally unflattering assumption was that hey had bern given the job either as à 2 stopgap or because the President really io be his own All of the reports about the happenings to the leaders of the Nazi Party in Germany which have been circulating in the world for the pass few weeks have been interesting, if' not always believable. The fact remains, however. that the only certain thing known about any of the more important of the Nazi hierarchy is that Rudolf Hess is in a British concentra~ tion camp. Reports about Goering have been conflicting. One stated that he also was in a concentration camp—but in Germany. Another said that he was still directing the Luftwaffe, or what is left of it The latest declares that he has had his legs blown off during a British raid on a German aerodrome.: These reports are intriguing, though not very informative, and it may be deduced withen taking many risks that Goering is probably sulking in one of his many palatial residences, and possibly expanding the already enormous area he possesses for the reception of even more decorations, At all events. something seems to have happened to him which is not altogether in the run of the usual experiences of the Nazi No. 2. What it is, only time will show. It may, of Course, be not unconnected with the report which the Exchange Telegraph's correspondent in, Switzerland has got hold of and which concerns Hitler's mental condition. According to this report. Hitler has been forced to leave the Russian front and retire to Berchtesgaden for examination by prominéné alienists. These experts of the "loony bin" are said to have agreed that Hitler must not be told "any bad news." The report is reproduced elsewhere in this paper "for what is is worth." It has been the opinion of many persons who have followed the career of Der Führer in private that alienists ought to have been called in long ago. If this had been done in the early 1920's. the world might have been saved much travail.
