Pork Reaches Record

Of $3 Per Catty Alleged Due to Japanese Controlled Market increase of the price of [pork to the record level of $3 per catty making it beyond the reach of the average resident in Shanghai, like native rice, is attributed to the increase of commissions by brokers in the Shanghai Live Stock Market in Hongkew. This is revealed in reports published by the leading Chinese dailies which assert that if commissions are not reduced serious trouble miny develop. It is hinted that pork dealers may call a strike.

Representatives of pork dealers in both foreign areas here called on representative brokers at the market en Friday afternoon and asked if the latter's commission might be reduced. Their request was refused and the;|brokers are quoted as saying that if their market decided to increase the commission pork dealers had to pay "t "unconditionally."

The negotiations were deadlocked although further talks may be held later.

Whereas before the commission for one live pig sold by the market which m izes the business was only $1 it has now been increased to $5 or more. "the reports state that although the jose manage the market, Chinese brokers are the most powerful middlemen who would do something to their own advantage without the knowledge of the Japanese. When brought to face pork dealers, the middlemen could say that they had been ordered to do so by the Jepanese, it is alleged.
