1 Heart Pass Pass Soum Wer Nor Ease

The Answers

(1) Double. West may have a fairly strong hand not quite good enough to ofercall but good enough io make some score at spades or hearts, There is little danger of a North-South game, for North was Enar 100 weak to respond to the opening bid and South cannot have any great major-suit strength. (2) Pass, West can hardly have any great strength or, being vulnerable against mon-vulnerable opponents he would not have waited to over-call. For East to bid would therefore risk a vulnerable penalty with no commensurate hope of gain, (3) Double, West may have passed a fairly strong hand, hoping his vulnerable opponents would get in trouble, and may even be able to pass the double of one heart, East, with his heart strength, should not fear that South can re-enter the bidding and make game or any other high score.
