Contrary to popular opinion, perhaps, the country to the west of Shanghai is as open and as attractive as ever to the nature lover. This is the ideal season to explore it. There are a variety of routes to follow, each one with its own characteristics, and most of them fully described in "Country Walks," the walkers handbook compiled by Mr. E. S. Wilkinson. It costs $5 and can be obtained from most booksellers, or from the "North-China Daily News" Office. A feature of "Shanghai Country Walks" is the excellent collection of maps it contains.
