Washington, Feb. 6, Russia has been buying large amounts of coconut oil on the west coast of the United States and transhipping it to Germany, unimpeachable trade sources told the United Press today.
These purchases, together with Russian copra purchases directly from the Philippines, were probably designed to furnish' Germany with supplementary sources of glycerine for black gunpowder, other propellants and other industrial uses, they said.
The trade sources also alleged that Japan in the past few months had bought 2,000,000 pounds of glycerine in the United States, They added that formal representations to the State Department may be instituted from United States business leaders to supplement the recent British complaints concerning transshipments to Germany by Russia,—United Press, Whole Family Attempts To Commit Suicide Chungking, Feb. 6.
A. sensation was caused among literary and arts circles here when it was learned that the whole family of the well-known Chinese play wright, Hung Sheng, attempted to commit suicide yesterday when Mr, Hung, his wife and his daughter swallowed large quantities of quinine and mercurochrome.
It is understood that the whole family attempted to commit suicide because Mr. Hung could not support his family on his income due to the high cost of living and also because Mr. Hung was not able to pay the medical expenses for his daughter's illness—Reuter.
