Soviet Ambassador

London, Sept. 28.

Broadcasting to the British people last night on why Russia needed more tanks, the Soviet Ambassador, M. Ivan Majky, declared that on the Russian front the greatest battle that mankind had ever known had been raging for more than three months, and on the outcome of this battle the whole issue of the war depended.

After thanking British workers for their effort in the "Tanks for Russia" week in words similar to those of his message to the British Ministry of Supply, M. Maisky said, "Ore may perhaps ask why the Soviet nion needs tanks from Britain, I will attempt to answer this question in a very few words.

"k is true that country has its own well-developed tank industry. Before the war it fully supplied our requirements. This is borne out by the number and quality of mechanised troops who were and are fighting today against the German invader.

"But after more than three months of war the situation in many respects has changed.
