As wages get higher the demand for consumer goods becomes greater. Thus, in the highly industrialized city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, sales of champagne have been very het vy.
Moreover, as wages increase mass purchasing-power and the demand for goods grows, production in the consumer industries must be increased to meet it, or else the insufficient supply inevitably incites the public to rush in and buy it increasing prices.
There ís absolutely no way of knowing what this war, whether this country enters it in a miilary way or not. is going to cost the United States. Indeed, the time is already pèst when responsible people who are closely informed even think of the situation in terms of dollars.
It is to be noted that there is no surplus of bombers or tanks or guns or any other military materiel. Moreover, as a British officer recently pointed out, the cost of building one modern bomber is many, many times greater than was the cost of a plane in the lest war.
So when this war finally comes to an end, virtually all other countries will be heavily indebted to the United St: tes. If these debts are recognized and any real effort is made to liquidate them, the United States will find itself owning properties of various kinds in most other countries. That is the only way it could expect to collect, because it certainly could not accept goods in payment without imperilling its whole internal economy.
It must not be assumed, for instance, that the people of the United States will quit. producing anything and merely sit by ind use goods produced by other nations and sent here in payment of debts.
One wonders if there is not such a thing in this world as being too rich. Yet, after the Napoleonic Wars, British control of capital permitted that enormous economic expansion that made possible the British Empire of this dav and era.
To say thet the United States would emerge from the war as the capital headquarters of the earth, dominant economically <lmost everywhere and certainly on this Hemisphere, is merely to state the obvious.
