A minor upset was seen in the first race when the strong public fancy. Rye. was defeated by a comparative outsider in Cherrylight who reached the winning post with half a length to spare. The Blackpoll nosed out Flyaway on the post to take third place two lengths away.
The only fly in the punters' ointment was American-ribbon who won the eleventh race to pay his lucky backers the sum of 13640 for each five dollar win ticket, Azadian rode a well judged race to win the Jockey Cup on Doc by reaching the post just à short head in front of White Night. Honeymoon Gift filled third place a length behind while the favourite, Merrylight, could not do better than run fourth fter leading the entire distance.
