Mechanical Feed

In actual fact, its operation can be greatly speeded up by the addition of a mechanical feed for the and this problem is now beling studied. At the moment, the operator has to pick a ticket out of a allow tray and insert it into the machine; the actual punching and numbering takes only a moment, It is expected that in its final, finished form, the machine will be' able to turn out as many as 20 or more tickets in a matter of seconds, the operator just pulling down the lever the required number of times and the tickets shooting out into his hand, instead of his having to reach out and insert one each time, as is the case "What I want," he said to himself, "is some sort of a machine in which a ticket for a race can be inserted, the number of the horse chosen by the punter stamped on or punched out, and which will also give an imlate record of the number of tickets sold on that particular horse in that race.

Olsen is not a mechanical genius or inventor, but he had, in his mind's eye, a pretty fair picture of the sort of machine that was needed, and all that remained was for someone with experience of mechanics, levers and so on, to work out the details so that the machine would function smoothly and eficiently, Eventually, he took his idea to the Linotype & Machinery Ca, probably the only firm in Shanghai able to handle the task—anyone who knows anything about linotype machines will agree that the company which builds them should know something about complicated machinery!
