More Funds Asked

Washington. June 6.

President Roosevelt yesterday declared that the American emergency may last more than four years and in a message to Congress urgently requested that body to authorize expenditure totalling US$285,000.000 With which to complete the new Canadian-United States seaway and power project connecting the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence river.

He asserted that approval of the requested funds would serve notice on America's enemies that "we intend to out-strip them in the race of production."

The President pointed out that development of the vast project would enable ocean-going vessels to reach the Great Lakes and would also produce an additional 2.200.000 hip. of electric energy for defence use. He said the project would also alleviate the congestion of U.S. railways.
