Like many movie stars in America, Miss Chou charges her husband with cruelty and bad temper. In a statement issued to the press yesterday through her three lawyers, she alleged that dhe had been beaten many times by her husband during the past three years but that she had kept everything hushed up because she did not want to spoil her own fame. Last autumn, she says, she tried to commit suicide but was saved by friends. The police have evidence, she says, but her husband did not repent. On the contrary, he became more cruel than before, She finally asked a lawyer to forward a letter to her husband to ask for a divorce by mutual agreement, she explains.
A few hours before her statement appeared in the press a stir was caused in Chinese circles here when ber husband issued a public statement alleging that she had run away from him, taking with her pass books and ornaments, and hinting that she might have also been deceived by some one, Miss Chou has denied these allegations, saying that she has taken away only those things which belong to her and that she has been driven out from her home only by "Mr. Yen's cruel actions."
