STRAY NOTES

year that I see stray cats lurking among the Weihaiwei, July 12—1t is just at this time of Scrub-oak in the hills: and when we add to this the fact that this is the time when so many young Rock Pigeons and Hill Partridges are feeding in the same place, some hundreds of feet etc. so why should not an Eagle Owl deal with a cat if it comes poaching in his preserves? Strangely enough I soon found an answer in the April number of "The Ibis" headed. "White: Owl (Tyto alba) taking a kitten":

"My brother tells me of the following incident which occurred at his estate at Thebert Suffolk, feet from the ground. A ladder was brought...a White Owl few out...and a small black kitten was found in an empty nest. The kitten was recognized as one of a litter from the farm some 200 yards distant. Doubtless the kitten was mistaken for a rat. made the se in his repast, a respite which saved the little animal's life." grown cak—ESw.
