that strong German forces had struck garly this morning acknowledged closer to Leningrad and had driven deeper into the Ukraine in the vic-mity of the important communications centre of Uman.
For the first time in one week, the Red Army reported new German advances over a long front. The communique said that in the north. the Red Army "stubbornly resisted" the Germans in the Soltsi sector, 120 miles south of Leningrad and 40 miles closer to' the vital northern city than Porkhov where the biggest struggle of the north previous! ad been reported as centred.
On the vital Ukrainian front, the Germans new offensive apparently was passing by Kiev to slice into the heart of the Russian bread-basket southward toward Odessa.
Fighting was said to be under way at Uman. 130 miles south of Kiev. along the main railway to Odessa This was the first mention that hostilities had reached Uman.
