Several Salesian fathers took the initiative some time ago to attempt to provide some kind of education for the children of the destitute in the area, Their efforts were crowned with success, although they have had to live under the most primitive and trying conditions, at one time going even without electricity.
They took over a building occupied partially by the Japanese cavalry who recently vacated and turned over their portion of the place to the missionary workers, The sight of numerous children of the destitute living without the least chance of receiving any sort of education prompted the fathers to select Nantao as their field. They at first started a working boys' club which was a pronounced success. An elementary school for boys followed in front of the St. Joseph's School.
When the fathers took over the building formerly.ocrupied by the Japanese military conditions were deplorable. as there were no light or even lighting fixtures.
